Games played over a wireless connection

I have a laptop and Netgear wireless router. The router is downstairs in my small house and I've tried playing games on the laptop over the internet upstairs. However, I always get "connection errors" meaning the action freezes for a few seconds - which doesn't happen over a wired connection. I have no problems with general web surfing anywhere in the house.

These errors occur even if the signal strength and quality is shown as very good or excellent.

Has anyone else had similar problems and, if so, do you know how to solve this problem.

p.s. I've also tried playing games wirelessly right next to the router and I still get the same errors.
