First 2 slots have 512MB fitted, buying 2x1 GB sticks because they are cheap at present. All compatible according to Crucial. Should I leave the original 2 where they are or should I fit the 2x1 GB ones in their place and refit the 2x512 in the slots left? Motherboard accepts up to 4 GB so no problem there.

Unless it's a dual channel memory motherboard, put the 2x1GB sticks in the first two slots.

OOps just run Belarc and it says the processor is :- 2.10 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
Do I put the memory in differently?

No.

Sorry that should read it's the motherboards memory controllers that control dual channel memory.

A dual core cpu is different.

Are you sure the motherboard is not dual channel memory. Do you know the make and model of the motherboard or computer?

Computer is a Compaq Presario SR5209UK
Motherboard is an ECS Nettle2 1.0

Your motherboard does support dual channel memory:)

Put the first 2 sticks of 1Gb in the black slots and the remaining 2 in the blue slots.

That should give you optimum memory speed.
