Full CD-Rs and privacy

I have an increasing number of CD-Rs which are full and contain what I regard as sensitive information, e.g. letters with names and addresses on. There seems to be no way to delete this information and the only alternative seems to be to smash or scratch the CD-R. Is this the case?
