FTP with HDD/LAN/FTP NS-347 A61FY enclosure

I'm trying to get the FTP server on a NS-347 (Maplin A61FY) 3.5" LAN HDD enclosure box to work for remote access. I'm behind a Wanadoo VOIP router which has port 21 (default port for the enclosure) opened for TCP in the firewall and forwarded for NAT to the enclosures ip address.
From the lan the FTP server is working fine in all ways, but from elsewhere the box responds correctly to text FTP commands from a MSDOS type prompt such as username, password, and CD but refuses to allow the DIR or LS command to list the directory contents.
If a browser window FTP is used the box fails to even generate a username and password prompt.
Anyone else had a similar problem ? ideas ?
