freezing on startup

I am running xp on my desktop machine - this morning it is freezing on the very first startup screen showing hp invent and the logo for intel insice ( it is an HP machine) sound of the discs working and no keyboard acions make any difference.....have tried turning on and off - help please

sorted - when i thought it through - no hard disc noise so side cam off and cable which had come loose pushed back into place - system now working and me feeling a bit of a muppet.....

Go into the BIOS (if you are comfortable with that) and find the Full Screen Logo entry and disable it. Do NOT touch anything else!! This will then allow you to see what is happening on bootup. Could be a corrupt boot file.
To Fix it if it is.
Boot from the XP CD and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type chkdsk /p and hit enter
When that is done type fixboot and hit enter
Next type Y and enter at the prompt.
Then type exit and hit enter
The system should now reboot into Windows
