Freezing PC

I don't know what caused my pc to freeze/lock or how to find out what caused it but I'm now getting annoyed. Everything freezes without warning or regularity - even the clock - from the moment I switch it on. After varying ammounts of time it unlocks for about 10secs before locking again. However, sometimes when I reboot it it doesn't recognise the attached dvd-rom and cd-rw, they're not listed in My Computer. When this happens the pc works fine (apart from the drives being usless). Any ideas ? Driver problems?

you let us know the specification of your PC.

Win 98, me, or xp, etc.

Amount of ram, cpu and on.

All the best.

My pc is a Gateway with ME,128MB SDRAM & an Athlon processor.I did have one error message which appeared only once and read: 'terminating thread due to a stack overflow prolem.A VxD has consumed too much stack space.Increase the setting of MnSPs in System.ini.' . I found System.ini but no settings to increase + I don't know if this relates to my problem.
