Freezing Mouse

My optical wireless iTrust mouse keeps freezing every few seconds and will only move when I press a button. The batteries are new, the mouse is only about 10" from the receiver and I have uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted the computer several times without improvement. The keyboard works OK as does a wired USB mouse. One point to note is that when I go to shut down the PC I get a program not responding message for MCCWSAWindow. I'm running XP MCE on a P4 with 1G RAM. Any advice most appreciated.

Is there some sort of power option to save batteries, perhaps its going to sleep and the setting can be adjusted.
