What operating system? How much RAM? When it freezes up, can you restart it immediately or do you have to let it stand for a time?

Windows xp with sp1, pent 4, 2.66GHz 256MB OF RAM. when it freezes we have to use the restart button and it starts up straight away

256M is barely enough for reliable operation of XP, another 256M will make a big difference. Also run Ccleaner click here to remove accumulated temporary files and other clutter and A-squared free click here to see if it can find any malware that might be wasting resources.

Just check that the air vents are not clogged up with dust and fluff.if so inside will also need cleaning out.It may be overheating.

Overheating will generally require a cooling down time before the computer can restart. Try testing the RAM, either by substitution or by running MemTest click here. An occasional cleanup with Ccleaner is never a bad idea as well.
