Freespace recognition

I run two PC's, a laptop and a desktop.
I have a Freecom portable hard drive.
If I connect this to either computer it shows an identical result (in properties) in that 50gb is used and 20gb is free space. However - and this only applies to the laptop - if I try to copy a large file (ie 6gb) to the drive it says that the drive has insufficient free space? Anything less than that will copy fine? I have no problem copying large files from the desktop.
Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

what file format is the laptop.
fat32 or ntfs.

The laptop is both ... the 'C' drive (with the OS - XP2SP2) is FAT32.
(It came partitioned and re-installed after repair.)
The 'D' is NTFS, and it is the 'D' drive that I am trying to export from.
The portable is FAT32.
