Free Ram checker?

My PC has recently slowed down dramatically. This is from the initial start up. I have de-fragged it many times, removed all progs I don't now use so leaving over 20 gigabytes of free hard drive space and used numerous registry tools to clear out old bits and pieces from there. Ad aware and Spy bot advise no problems but it is still very slow. I recently installed FreeRam xp and this has shown that although I have 256mb of RDRAM I am sometimes down to as little as 3% free with no applications running. I have reduced the number of apps starting to the bare minimum, (virtually to just the virus checker - McAfee). Is it likely to be the RAM itself, can I chek it, or is there another likely cause? How do I check to see if an application has a memory leak except by removing them one by one?

Any help would be most appreciated
