free laptop protection Windows XP SP3

My Norton Internet Security 2012 is about to expire and I want to change to free protection, partly to save money, partly to reduce the amount of disk space (and therefore lessen the drain) on my aging HP Compaq 6715b laptop. I have more or less decided on downloading Microsoft Security Essentials, and to continue using CCleaner I already have installed. Do I need to think of adding anything else to give me comparative protection to the comprehensive Norton I.S.?

If anyone feels strongly against the M.S.E., any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have always Thought Norton was to expensive; I use MSE on my 3 machines.

MSE is OK but remember XP firewall is incoming only you need a firewall that will do both incoming and outgoing.

AS previously stated back up MSE with Malwarebyte or SAS

Spywareblaster is a good blocker and does not use any resources

I prefer Avast to MSE
