Formula in XL

Can any one help please?
Is there a formula to check a list of values in one column with a list of values in another column and to hilite or mark those that match.
Thank you

VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP functions allow you to search ranges of data for a match. I haven't used them in a long while, so can't give you step-by-step instructions, but maybe someone else can. You may have to combine them with an IF statement so that you end up with a simple "Y" or "1" or whatever you want to signify a match was found.

A bit more explanation needed. A match for any value in another column or the same row in another column?
