If your file system is fat32 and not NTFS then you can use a win98 start up disk. Just pop it in and pick start with cdrom support. At a:\ type a:\ format c: and enter.

If it is NTFS then;

If you go into your bios and then to advanced cmos. You will then have to change your first boot sequence to cdrom. Save the settings and exit.

Now start your machine with the X\P disk in. This will start a new installation but it will also give you the option to format.

Go to Boot menu in Bio.

Follow the advice from tran1

Boot with the XP CD. You must ensure your BIOS is set so the boot
sequence has the CD-Rom before the C drive. When you boot with the XP CD
you have a few seconds to "press any key to boot CD". Once the CD boots
you will have a few moments where it installs files then it will ask if
you wish to Install Windows XP or repair with Recovery Console. Select
the option to install and you will have a License Agreement presented.
Press F8 to accept the agreement and you will be presented with the
option to Repair your current installation of Windows or do a clean install.
Select the option for a new install and you will have the options to
reformat.

Look through the various sections and you will find a entry for first boot. Change this to cdrom.

Or have you tried just putting the X\P disk in and the switching on.
