Formatting a partition

  perplexed user 19:40 20 Aug 08

I'm trying to upgrade my notebook from XP to Vista (upgrade version) which only allows a clean install. When In try that I get a blue screen an the PC locks. Therefore I'm minded to format my C drive. Unfortunatley in disk management the format disk is greyed out. So where to next? Anyone any ideas please?

That is because you cant format a HDD partition that is already in use (safety precaution for noobs)you need to format the partition from the disc.

Load the disc and choose 'upgrade', but before you try and upgrade to Vista make sure you have enough memory to support the OS - minimum is 1GB but will run better on 2GB or more.

format is no good to clear the drive, you need to remove the partition then start with Vista CD. Not forgetting to get all the Vista Drivers for your laptop Hardware first
