Do I need to format a new hard drive ready to install XP Pro? If so, how do I do it? My current system is Windows 98se.

Boot from the XP Pro Cd and it will partition and format for you.

"Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately XP Pro freezes at the point where it has loaded the initial drivers and will go no further. Do you have any ideas?"

You definately do not have to fdisk/format prior to starting up from the installation CD, as the Cd will do that for you. If you cannot get that far, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Check that the Virus checking built in to the BIOS is disabled.

Try changing the RAM modules - or removing one of them, or swapping them around.

Has the system been changed from it's previous working (?) configuration.

Have you run the XP compatability checks?

Do you have any unusual hardware - or a disk management utility installed?
