Formatting Hard drive

I taken kept old hard drive from previous pc that has since died ,This still has the operating system on it etc, Plus my music and photo,s which i really dont want too lose could someone plz tell me in reasonbly simple terms how to go about installing the old hard drive into the new Pc without causing damage to the programs and files on my new Pc ? New PC is still using XP . I do understand how install/fit the harddrive into the Pc not what to do after that please help ??

and fit it into it. That will turn it into an External USB Hard Drive. About £20 ~ Get a Mains Powered one.

Then you will be able to copy your old files onto the new PC and then use it as a Back-up Device.
