If I transfer the hard disk with windows95 on from an older computer into a 2nd computer computer also running Windows 95, will I then be able to format the disk and virtually start from scratch when replacing it in the older machine. I tried to format it in situ, but Windows cannot format a disk while you are running Windows on the same disk.

No but you can if you do it in DOS

or

you can do as you suggest and install it in the other machine as a slave and format it there.

If it's windows 95 choose start up in DOS on the A:\PROMPT type format c:
Put a space between format and C.
