Formatting an External HDD

I have installed a 3.5" HDD into an external caddie and cnnected it to the computer via a USB2 cable. Question: How do I format it? It is to be used as backup storage.

If you're using XP, click Start, Run, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter.

When you see your external hard disk, see what it says about it. If there's already an existing partition, then just right click and select format. Note XP cannot format a partition larger than 32GB with the FAT32 file system.

I tried this last year with a 80 Gb HD and was unable to format my new hard disk via my USB2 connection.

Eventually I managed to format it OK by connecting it as a second drive in my PC and after returning it to it's caddy everything worked OK.

I mentioned this at my local computer store after I had sorted it and they said if I had colled in with my unformatted HD they would have formatted it for me for free?
