Formatting a DVD-RW

I have a DVD-RW on which it says will hold 4.7 GB.
I have 4.5 GB of data I wish to put on it.

When I erase it with Roxio Creator 2009 it tells me that I have 4.4 GB free space.
So what's happened to the other 0.3 GB?

Why can't I seem to store 4.5 GB of data onto a 4.7 GB DVD?

Because the 4.7GB figure is actually 4,700,000,000Bytes - which is only 4.37GB in "computer" figures (where 1KB is 1024Bytes).
