Format and reinstall

I was just wondering, if we get bogged down with virus ect. and
nothing seems to rectify it, after trying System Restore without any luck, how much trouble is it to format and reinstall, providing of course you have backed up your own files ?

I don't need to do this, but seeing all the trouble caused by the
rubbish out there in the cosmos, I was curious.

This can depend very much on type of system and whats on it.

It's much easier to make a nice clean Image of your hard drive with Acronis True Image, which will take about four minutes, and to restore it about the same time. Not Hours and hours of messing around, looking for all of the little bits of programmes which you had foregotten all about!
