I'm trying to format the Hard Drive of my laptop, I'm using the Win XP disc to boot from, in the belief that a format utility is offered before you set up windows, but it only offers to install Win XP.Where am I going wrong? TIA.

It is there.

When it says do you want to install xp say yes.

it will check and say there is an existing install.

Again carry on. It should then list the partition that xp is installed on and give you the opportunity to delete it, then recreate it, then format and install.
