format laptop hard drive

Due to slow operation I am about to format a laptop hard drive with XP installed.

It only has a 12Gb hard drive but I have created a partition, so that 2Gb is saved to record essential drivers.

Is there an easy list of what I need to save? As a minimum if I can get onto the Internet afterwards then I can download anything I have forgotten. Ideas please.

If you format a hard drive all data is lost.
Therefore XP will go too.
You did not really mean that did you?
Is it the case that you may have C drive with operating then a partition or two?

Speel out exactly the layout of the drive before you do anything at all.
If you format the whole drive do you have the Full operating system disk?

Thanks Jack, no I hadn't seen the other postings but I don't think I have a virus or trojan. I am quite happy to format including XP and then reload again.

If it only has 12Gb, I wouldn't bother to partition, just back up essentials on to cd.

A good idea Fingees, apart from the fact that the laptop is old, and has a play only cd, not record!

Was it born with XP?
12 Gb seems mighty small- XP will gobble all of that and not much left for anything else.
If you can put it back a couple of steps ME or even 98SE- then you may get something useful from it.
