Format laptop Drive

My laptop which is broken has to be sent back to a firm which will replace it through an insurance claim. The screen is broken and I would like to format the hard drive before it goes back. Is it possible to format with screen broken or can it be connected to desktop monitor and view contents that way.

can it be connected to desktop monitor

yes but there will be a key combination to switch to the external monitor, usually Fn+F7, look for a moitor symbol on the F keys in blue or check your manual.
