format hard drive for XP

please can someone tell me the best way to go about formating my computer - I have just bought XP and would like to install it (my system is compatible)
I did previously install it without formating - but there are some programs still on there I don't want

if you set your PC to boot from CD, there is no need to format.
Place the CD in the drive and restart your computer and the installation will walk you through the steps for deleting and setting up for a clean install.

Go into your BIOS and st your CD drive as first bootable drive. re-boot the PC and then insert the XP CD into your drive, it will auto run and Use the option to do a clean install, it will format the drive, then install for you. j.

Bit of extra >>>

Set the BIOS to boot from CD. When the machine kicks up and you see the "press any key to boot"...

"press any key to boot CD". Once the CD boots you have an option to Install Windows XP or repair with Recovery Console. Select the option to install and you will have a License Agreement presented. Press F8 to accept the agreement and you will be presented with the option to Repair your current install of Windows or do a clean install. Select the option for a new install and you will have the options to reformat.

It'll ask, as its copying files to use during installation to press F6 if you need to install SCSI or Raid drivers at the bottom of the screen ignore them. You'll come to a screen that'll ask you where you want to install WinXP and as you continue you'll be asked if you want to format the drive. (There's an option for Quick Format but I would do the Full Format) and I would also tell it to Format using NTFS.

Format whatever installations you have installed and install Windows back to the primary drive.

I'd be interested if this method also works for installing WIn XP on a Win 98SE machine?

  TECHNODIMWIT 18:25 22 Oct 03

this is for full install and yes for 98SE if your pc wil take XP

As TECHNODIMWIT says, it's the same for the upgrade version or the full version. The only difference between the two is that the upgrade CD will ask you to insert your qualifying O/S CD to verify. j.
