Format hard drive which contains OS

I have an elderly PC which is dead slow. XP pro, SP3. I would like to clean install XP, but can't format the hard drive. Have tried loading my XP disc, but get error message that current OS is newer than that on disc, so won't install. Is there any way round this?

I wiped the drive with killdisk then installed xp from the disc.

Try speeding up the system by other methods:

The error message that you report is consistant with the message that you see if you attempt to do a repair by pressing 'R' instead of 'ESC'to contiue with the installation. .I have seen it on an old Mesh PC.
