How do I format an HDD which is split into 3 partitions. I can format the partitions individually but want to reformat the entire disk under a single drive label???

I think you'll have to go into FDISK and remove the partitions first.

need re-merge the partitions using partition magic or similar...

Or use Partition Magic and just merge the Partitions no need to reinstall

Is FDISK a part of XP then?
I can't remember what I did when I created the partitions and so I don't know what application I used to do it!

Partition Magic is a program designed to manage disk partitions while maintaining data and would obviously do exactly what you require.

however, if you plan to completely reformat then as valvegrid suggests, simply use the formating option of your operating system to delete each partition in turn and then to perform an format on the resulting (large) partition. You will loose all data but then that does not appear to be an issue.
