Format flash memory stick?

In the "bad old days" of floppy disks, it was normal to reformat them periodically.
Is there any benefit in periodically reformatting a flash memory stick that is used for temporary storage i.e. files are written, used and then deleted.

I do not see any reason why it would be necessary unless the device had started to display read or write errors.

Not a good idea as a USB drive is only good for so many read write functions, so why waste some?
