Format drive with XP installed

I am trying to reformat a hard drive with XP home edition installed.
On every attempt I am told a disc utility is running and to close it before retrying I have closed all the programs I can find but still get the message.

Any ideas anyone.

What "partition" are you trying to format??? e.g. c: drive or another???

If it is the c: drive, then you have to "boot from the cd" (aka the Microsoft Windows XP Instation disk) and follow the on-screen instructions (normally you have to press "enter->f8->d->L->enter->enter")

go to run type msconfig and select startup and untick all the programs

That would be very dangerous... If Oscar was to do this, Oscar wouldn't be able to log into windows, so that would be very foolish!!!

Is this the image you are seeing click here

If so follow mattyc_92 instructions.

Un ticking everything in msconfig > startup for windows 2000 or XP will have absolutely no affect of windows booting to desktop. The most dangerous thing it would do is to disable anti virus and 3rd party firewall. This would leave the computer vulnerable if connected to the internet.

If every thing were disabled in startup on 95, 98 or me. Then this would have disastrous effects.

My msconfig > start up. XP click here

yes this is the screen I am seeing so I need to get the XP disk and follow the instructions from mattyc_92.

Many thanks ALL for your help.
