Floppy Drive Mystery!!

  andywg 13:33 22 Jan 04

I have a pc running Win XP Pro which is causing me a severe problem with the floppy drive!

Even when a disc is in the drive it will tell you there is'nt one and will not read it.
I have replaced the actual drive (twice), still the same result, replaced the floppy cable with a new one, same result!

I then deleted the floppy and driver from the device manager and let it pick them up again on reboot to no avail!

The PC picks the drive up ok and it is listed in my computer but the floppy drive makes no clicking sounds as if reading a disc whether one is in the drive or if it is empty.

What can it be or what can I do?

All suggestions would be much appreciated!

Could be that the floppy slot on the motherboard is faulty?

Does the power light come on - maybe the power cable is faulty?

If the PC picks up the drive then its probably down to the data line being faulty. Suggest you take out the cable at the mobo and check to ensure no bent pins. If there are, CAREFULLY re-align then try again. If not, or you have a broken pin then its a new mobo

I dont know if the power light flashes as the drive is behind a cover and I cant see it, but I did wonder if the M.Brd slot may be faulty, will have to see what I can do.

Thanks very much for the advice guys...

My son, an IT support specialist, once told me that 95 per cent of floppy drive problems were due to faulty or insecure leads or cables.

You should still be able to see the power on light as it is only a few millimetres below the disk slot; if not, open the flap...:-)
