Floppy disk problem

  geoff47 18:03 02 Feb 08

I am trying to use my Floppy drive.
When I feed a disk into the drive and click on it in My Computor, it asks to Format it, rather than open it.
After a moment it tells me "windows cannot format"
Is this a problem with the drive itself or have I installed the drive wrongly ?

It may be a problem with the disk.

Have you tried an alternative one to see if it can be read?

I have two with data one it and several empty ones.It does the same to all of them.Although it did open one earlier, as it should do, then it became obstinate.
When I tried to use an empty one it refused.

I have only recently installed this drive, from advice on this site.
CDs hold too much to be any good for what I am wanting to do.

If the disc as not been used for some time it may stick, so tap on edges on you hand. but the info on it may be lost

Some are brand new discs, but they have been laying about for ages, its worth a try.

Right clicking and asked to scan I get a message.
"The volume does not contain a recognised file system"

I would check that the ribbon cable on the back of the floppy drive has not become slightly dislodged/loose.

CDs hold too much!!Does it matter, they only cost pennies.Dont understand why you cant use something that holds too much?
