i have,nt used a floppy disk for years..and can,t think of any circumstance when i will.is it possible to turn the drive off in bios ? device manager ?.

Yes, just set it to 'Not Installed' or similar in the BIOS.

cheers...what effect will it have on the system?.will startup be quicker for instance.

It won't make any significant difference at all. It may save a second on bootup if you are lucky.
