fixing startup file not found error

My antivirus programme recently quaranteened a 'dialler' - fine by me... but since then at startup I get a file not found error (ie the file that was removed). Now I would like to get rid of this annoying message - I tried running ad-aware and spy-bot but the problem persists. I ran msconfig and unchecked the offending line but then on startup I had another error message to the effect that I was in a special diagnostic mode and should undo the changes I had made and restart - which of course takes be back to where I started. Before I do anything I will regret any advice? My OS is XP and I am on broadband so could have left the dialler alone in the firstplace I guess!

Untick it in msconfig. When you see that special diagnostic mode message, just tick the box not to show it in future.
