Fitting a sound card

Hi Guys,

A lad at work has asked me to fit a sound card in his pc for him. He bought a Dell pc late last year model 5150, I think.
It has on board sound at the moment and his son is a budding DJ so wants the sound card in for him.
I believe I will have to disable the on board sound in the bios first, is there anything else I should know before I go ahead with the fitting.

Thanks in advance........Fred

i have added a sound card to my computer
and yes if you go into bios and disable in my case ac97 onboard sound chip well worth doing
everything else is normal

With a sound card there is really no need to disable the existing card but my sound card gave up the ghost and I decided the best course of action was to get an external one (cost me about £20 from Maplins) works fine and has 5.1 capability - just plugged it into a USB port and it worked fine - so why bother even opening up the PC case and causing a problem unless u really know what you are doing (no offence meant - you may well do - but this is the easier option)

as you mention, disable onboard sound via bios, boot up and then remove all soundcard drivers from windows they may cause problems later. shut down, install card, boot up and install drivers when requested.

hopefully it should run perfectly.

goonerbill states, "remove all soundcard drivers from windows they may cause problems later"

Can any one explain where I will find these drivers so I don't make a mess of it.

Thanks for help so far and any in advance guys.

Click control panel>addremove programmes

If it is an Nvidia chipset then click on the Nvidia add/remove, a box pops up asking if you want to uninstall all or parts of drivers, click on parts and then click remove audio only

Thanks a lot madboy33. I will give it a go and tick this as resolved, I know if I have problems I can depend on the geniuses in here to help me out.
