Fitting Asus 5224A rewriter

Problems!! Recognised by DOS, and drive appears in My Computer, if I insert a disc (any installation disc for instance), I am informed that it is an audio disc with 1 track, it is impossible to open it, and if I insert an audio CD it comes back and tells me it cannot convert the data! Has anyone got any clues as to what is wrong? The rewriter is connected as a Primary slave to the hard disc, and please don't say try other combinations as I've been through all of them and this is the only one that doesn't cause lock ups. i've even reformatted the hard disk, and done a clean reinstall of Windows98.

are fitting the ribbon cable correctly. ie. normally on a 2 connector ide cable the end connection is the master and the centre one is the slave.
