First format of hard drive

This isn't so much a problem as a queery.

When my pal built my latest system, he mentioned something about he had to format the new drive before putting anything on it, when I told him I was thinking about doing it myself.

At the time it didn't occur to me to question this, but I just had a brainstorm. What did he mean?

I just assumed that I could put it in and load an O/S.

You have to partition and then format so that the drive is active to accept data.

When you buy and fit a new HDD it has to be formatted before you can install your operating system.Fit the HDD get it recognised in the BIOS and then format it and set the partitions.

What O/S would you likely to load. I use Win98SE and I'm always reformatting and partitioning different machines, it's no big deal once you know how.

When a new HDD is fitted, it has to be set up to do the job in the same way that a CD-RW ora floppy have to be before it can be used to do the job.

Thanks for that guys and dolls. I guess it's a good job I left it to him eh?

P.S. Sorry for the delay in responding, but I got distracted by another site :)
