Firewire

My dad recently got a second computer - a Laptop.

He is wanting to do video editing (camcorder to laptop). He has an existing Firewire cable but it is 6 to 4 pin rather than a 4 to 4 pin (laptop has 4 pin socket). I see that Maplins do a "connector" to convert 6 pin to 4 pin for about £4.99.

Are these worth getting rather than a brand new cable?

Is there likely to be any loss in quality/signal strength?
