Firewalls for a router - fixed or upgradeable

I'm about to install a router and been advised to use one with an inbuilt firewall. However I'm told that the inbuilt firwall is fixed and therefore not updateable.

Question - is this a good idea or am I better having a router without the firewall and run firewall software on my pc.

TIA

I'm running both.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router/hub and each of the PC's has a firewall.

One runs Tiny Firewall, the others use Outpost (both free).

The software firewalls give extra protection for controlling apps that may want to connect to the net.
