Firewall required for dial-up connection?

Until 2 years ago, I had a dial-up connection with no firewall and had no problems.
As soon as I got Broadband, I of course got one(Zonealarm).

I've now passed my old laptop to my parents, who are novices and therefore using a dial-up connection.

Is a firewall now considered a must-have no matter what your connection type?

Yes, to save any problems load Zone alarm

try sygate free firewall for your parents much easier to use and it's less intrusive I think. Dialup is prone to dialers and so on....

Better to be safe than sorry.
