Firewall help

I have a router with a built in hardware firewall, my question is, if I open a port and use port forwarding to a pc on my network is that port open to abuse full stop or is it safe as long as a program is using that port from the pc?
Any guidance to websites that give more info would be much appreciated.

What you can do is use the firewall on your router and use a software firewall on you PC i use this and have found no problems what so ever

You should have no problem using NAT if someone or something request to use that open port the router will drop the packet (stateful inspection)if a PC on your LAN didn't start the conversation.Only LAN request will be let back in.
