Firefox updating

I've used the Firefox Update facility to go from the 1.0 I originally installed to 1.02. I must have "missed"(!) 1.03, but when I tried to update to 1.04 I was still looking at that inscrutable - and totally uninformative - Firefox Update window after more than three hours on my broadband connection! Unfortunately I was obliged to abort at that point.
Trying another tack: can I download 1.03 from the Mozilla site as a "fresh start"? Do I have to uninstall my present 1.02, and if so, before or after? And does that lose my bookmarks etc?
Has anyone else had similar experiences ?

I've just seen that the Mozilla site is now offering the 1.04 download. Same question though: do I need to uninstall, and will I be able to keep settings?

Uninstall. The folders will remain and your settings will be retained.

Can I just ask If that's uninstalling before or after downloading 1.04?

It doesn't matter. Just uninstall before you install 1.04.

Download the 1.0.4 version. This is to fix a security issue in version 1.0.3

Many thanks. This certainly beats googling round and round in ever decreasing circles...
