Firefox and NTL B/B speeds

I am on Virgin / NTL 4meg B/B service, which has always been fine.
For the past week my service has been slower than a slug on Valiums.
If I download something the max speed I get for the download is 4kb's.
Virgin have done a ping test on my set up and they say its fine. They suggested that I give FireFox a try as my browser.

What does everyone think of this suggestion?
Once I move to FireFox how easy would it be to go back to IE if I wanted.
