Firefox freezing, PC slow at times, registry bad

Over the past 3 days I've suddenly developed a number of problems with the PC. I'm running Vista Home Basic 64.

First problem was firefox would occasionally just stop working. It would go grey, not work for a while and then pages would load and all would work well again.

Second problem and more concerning is that first thing in the morning my PC won't boot. I get a registry error message and can only boot once I use the repair disc to go back to an earlier restore point. Oddly this only happens on first boot in the morning. I can shut the PC down during the day with no problem.

Third is now that the PC is starting on a go slow at times.

I've checked and updated my graphics drivers, I've not added or removed any hardware in the recent past. My network connectiion is A1 with the other laptops in house.

I'm nearly at the stage of doing a complete format and reinstall.

Anybody any less drastic options?
