firefox error - xpcom event receiver

Sice installing the latest version of firefox a few days ago, on shutting down pc there appears to be an instance of a process left running - "firefox.exe" - which I have to kill manually before machine will shut down. This is apparently a known problem with no definite fix. I have tried re-installing, removing add-ons, extensions etc., and removing the .dll's from the firefox program folder as recommended, all to no avail. Has any one else had this problem, and any ideas to resolve the issue?

It appears that this problem occurred after opening online pdf files using firefox browser/adobe Reader. Updating to latest version of Adobe Reader seems to have fixed it. No error messages, no rogue processes!
