Firefox does not like my ImageMap ! - why not?

I've got an imagemap working fine in IE,
but the same page will not work in Firefox!

Is there something firefox needs before it will work?

Heres my code:

img src="background2.jpg" name="emp" alt="" height="568" width="809" usemap="#background2" border="0" />

map name="background2">
area shape="rect" coords="245,62,348,110" href="hotel.html">
/map> /div>

Note - for some reason the "less than" signs have not come out, ,, but they are present in the code.

What's it not doing??
I got it to link fine using the same code..
I was however using a gif that I had lying around..

<img src="background2.gif" name="emp" alt="" height="568" width="809" usemap="#background2" border="0" />

<map name="background2">
<area shape="rect" coords="245,62,348,110" href="hotel.html">
