Filter device invalid

does anyone know how to resolve the following problem.
On startup (Win XP Home SP2) I recieve the following message "One of the filter drivers for this device is invalid"
I originally saw the problem when I installed a third hard drive (Hitachi 160Gig Hard drive) into my system. Although the system indicates a problem with this device, the drive appears to work as it should, as soon as the error messages are cancelled.
I now have the same error with the built in card reader on the epson R340 printer I have added to my system.?
