Files with .rdb extension

After OS crash (Compaq) and replacement laptop (Toshiba), I'm trying to recover my data from Maxtor external HD. When I do, I end up only in safe mode. Having done a 'system restore'the backed up data is visble on the external HD as *.rdb and I can't open it or restore. Any suggestions, please? I am awaiting response from Maxtor; but I guess they're all eating Christmas Pudding.

Hi, don't know if this will help, but does explain about file extensions and possibly ways to open/read. click here

Do not switch on the external until computer has started, see what happens !

Thanks to both of you.
The website suggested says that '.rdb' files are:TrueVector Rules database
ZoneAlarm Rules database
I'm afraid that I don't know what they are!

I did'nt switch on or plug in the maxtor USB until my machine was switched on. It chuntered away for about an hour, restoring the back up. Then told me to re start and went into safe mode.

I think the problem is that the OS on the Toshiba(the new one) is marginally different to the Compaq. Or that they use the OS diffently.
