File Transfer

I tried to move a video file to my external hard drive but got the message that there was not enough room but when I checked there was 40 gig of space.I then tried to move some folders from that drive to my other external drive to make more room but got this error mesage.The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.Can someone advise.

error suggests a hardware fault or damaged file system..

format drive to NTFS if it still persist's check cables, if that fails your HDD could be dying, try a CHKDSK/R

Just tried to move some more folders to the hard drive and they transfered ok so I must presume it is the actual file which is faulty
