File size of Word docs with pictures inserted

I have a jpeg picture which is 372KB.

If I open a new word doc and just insert this picture and save it, the file size of the word document is 2890kb.

Why is this?

I want to have a document with 20jpegs, but the file size is a whopping 100MB!!!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Are you saving as .doc or rtf?{rich text format}if so try saving the file to a word document file type{.doc}, to reduce file size.

Saving as 'doc'

Using office 2003, although the file will ultimately be used on a pc with office 97.

I was saving it as file type:

Word 97 - 2003 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*doc)

which is a doc file. I was choosing this to ensure compatability with Word97.

Choosing the standard doc type gives me the much smaller file size. I will have to now see how the file works on Word97

Are you sure you're saving the document in Word 2003 format.

It can be saved as a .doc file in an earlier version of Word, click here

Thanks for that link. Into my postings for when I get home later!

jpeg use compression, doc use no compression

if you just insert in your doc a link to jpeg file, not actually picture itself, you will solve this size problem

alternatively, you can save as doc file and then zip it
