File sharing causing communication block

Hi - can anyone suggest a solution to my problem:

Windows XPSP2 using Norton Internet Security 2006 is cutting my internet link at frquent intervals. My internet link is via a Belkin wirelss router.

Norton viewer log for firewall shows the message:
Rule "Block Windows File Sharing" blocked communication. Local address: 139.0.0.0(netbios-ssn(139)). Process name is System.

This can happen at any time but often appears to start around midnight and carry on until about 6 a.m. at 2-3 minute intervals. It can behave for several hours then suddenly starts again at varying intervals.

It appears to be some form of rogue program but Norton, Defender and Spybot show no problem. I recently was infected by SpywareQuake but I seem to have eradicated that.

I will put up a Hijackthis log if anybody wants to see it.

Thanks

Is this so complex that nobody has any advice?

Thanks ade.h - I'll give that forum a try.

Is your router and encryption set up securely? WPA-PSK encryption enabled, handy key generator here click here
Overkill but you only need pick as many characters as you like.

Have you tried changing wireless channels?
Checked for other nearby wireless networks when you experience the problems?
Someone elses's wireless device may be interfering with yours.
Set up MAC address filtering to only allow your machine(s) to connect to the router.

If you are not using Windows Networking, disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (port 139).
Network Connections/Wireless Connection Properties,
click the Properties button, uncheck Client for Microsoft Networks if installed, highlight TCP/IP, select Properties, click Advanced, WINS tab, check Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, apply/ok.
Again, only if you're not networking machines.

  BrightonAndy 23:46 02 Jul 06

Thanks Brundle

I'm not using encryption (I know I should really). I don't think it's anything to do with the router as I unplugged it and the problem still kept occurring - it seems to be an internal problem hence I wondered if I had some form of spyware trying to communicate outwards.

I'll have a look at disabling port 139 as per your instructions as i'm not networking. There is a second pc attached to the router but they aren't networked as such.

  brundle 23:51 02 Jul 06

take a look at what ports are in use with tcpview - docs a worth a read
some activity on 139 is normal unless you specifically stop it. tcp will usually show it as `netbios`
