File and Printer sharing setup

I have a Netgear DG834 wireless modem/router and to this is connected my desktop pc via ethernet cable which is running XP, I also have a laptop which connects via wireless, runnin Vista but I cannot get my 'wired' pc to show up on the laptop for file sharing although connection to the internet is fine.

I have checked that I have the desktop pc settings set for file and printer sharing, which I have but when I bring up the 'network map' on the laptop, it shows the laptop, the router and the internet.

If I disconnect the ethernet cable from the pc and use a USB wireless adapter then the desktop pc becomes visible.

Any ideas would be gratefully received

all pcs seem to need the guest account switched on. All pcs need to be on the same workgroup. I have read that vista defaults to workgroup whereas xp is mshome.
